Former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney says it is “really hard” to run as an independent or third party in a US election race but “not impossible”.
Republican candidate Nikki Haley has vowed to stay in the presidential race despite suffering a heavy loss to Donald Trump in her home state of South Carolina.
Mr Mulvaney breaks down the ‘sore loser law’ which prohibits an unsuccessful candidate in the primary election from running as an independent or third party in the general election.
“For example, in South Carolina, she would not be allowed to be on the ballot in 2024,” Mr Mulvaney told Sky News Australia.
“It’s really hard to be a third party – it’s especially hard to be a third party if you’ve already run as a Democrat or Republican as Nikki has.”
